Degetau, Federico

Born in Ponce December 5, 1862. He studied Law in Madrid, where he founded the liberal newspaper La Isla de Puerto Rico. He was a Delegate to the Cortes of Spain, representing Puerto Rico. He actively denounced all the injustices of Spain on the Island, and sought equality for the Puerto Ricans under Spanish law. After the Spanish American War, together with others he founded the Partido Republicano Puertorriqueño and sought U.S. citizenship and statehood. From 1901 to 1905 he was Resident Commissioner for Puerto Rico in Washington. He died in San Juan on January 20, 1914.
